John Burroughs Slabsides Geology Ramble

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

  • August 30, 2025, 9:00AM (rain or shine)

Detailed Times/Hours: 9:00 am to approximately 11:00 pm. Rain or shine. Afterwards, from 11:30 am until 4:00 pm, you are invited to tour John Burroughs' rustic 1895 cabin retreat "Slabsides," a National Historic Landmark and a Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area of Special interest. Through works written there about nature, John Burroughs had a profound impact on the emerging conservation movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He inspired generations of readers to head out of doors and national leaders to preserve land and its wildlife.

The rocks were one of naturalist John Burroughs' favorite aspects of the Slabsides location, but even he did not realize that the rocks represented sediments eroded from a Himalayan-scale mountain range nearly 400 million years ago. Since they were deposited in a shallow sea, the sediments were repeatedly caught in continental collisions, which bent them and stood them literally on end. As if that wasn't enough, they were most recently scraped clean by a mile-thick sheet of glacial ice which melted a mere 14,000 years ago. Join former Vassar College professor of earth sciences Jeff Walker for a hike to read the many stories in the rocks of the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary. The trails are part of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail System. SPACE IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

This September, take a stroll through history with the New Castle Historical Society's Greeley Farm Walking Tour. The land that is now downtown Chappaqua sits on what was once Horace Greeley's 78-acre farm, with the Historical Society's Horace Greeley House sitting at the northern boundary of this plot. Start on the front porch of the Greeley House to pick up a map of the farm, and then follow the directions to find 11 historic markers scattered along what was once the farm road. This self-guided walking tour passes the sites of former buildings, the spring that provided drinking water for the family, and remains of the dam Greeley built on the Tercia Brook, among other pieces of history. Catch a glimpse into the past as you pass by the modern landmarks like Robert E. Bell Middle School, the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Temple Beth El, the Chappaqua Library, Town Hall, and the train station, all of which are located on the former Greeley Farm. We recommend allowing 50-60 minutes for the walking tour. The Greeley House is a five-minute walk from the Chappaqua Train Station and just a short distance from the Saw Mill River Parkway. There is a small parking behind the Greeley House and plenty of street parking nearby on King Street, Senter Street, and North and South Greeley Streets.

Clermont Geology Walk

@ Clermont State Historic Site

  • September 7, 2025, 10:00AM (rain or shine)

Detailed Times/Hours: Walk leaves from the Clermont Visitor Center at 10 am. Ends at 12 pm.

Did you know that the geology of Clermont dates back 450 million years? Join professor Robert Titus as he leads us on a geology walk at Clermont State Historic Site. We will examine the bedrock rising east of the mansion and the silt and clay that lies closer to the river--- physical remnants of a time when the site was at the bottom of a marine abyss, similar to the Marianna Trench! Robert Titus and his wife Johanna are both retired scientists who have become popular science writers, well known throughout the Catskills. They have recently published a book entitled “The Hudson River Schools of Art and Their Ice Age Origins.” The book relates the Ice Age history of the Hudson Valley to the development of its 19th Century art, literature and landscape architecture. In short, Robert and Johanna argue that all Hudson Valley culture dates back to the Ice Age. The walk will begin at the Visitor Center and cover about 1 and a half miles throughout the park. The walk will include slight inclines and some uneven surfaces. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Mansion Tours will be available for a fee from 11 am to 4 pm.

What's So Great About a Farm Tour? Our farm tours focus on education, representation, and fun! We take time to teach people about the significance and history of our animals and how we can co-exist with them. Farm tours can help children and adults learn the importance of several farm animals and present them in a new, unique way. After all, how many kids can say they've seen an alpaca or llama? How about taking a walk with a donkey? Our farm tours are something special. The Animals On Our Farm Tours When you type "farm tours near me," most tours try to surprise you with ordinary, everyday domestic animals with which you've likely already had an interaction. At Clover Brooke Farm, we provide several unique and vibrant animals that love attention. We want to share with you the journey many of our animals have taken. Each furry (or fuzzy) companion no doubt has a tale to tell. Barn Cats Our barn cats , also known as the ‘meeters and greeters’ of the farm like to welcome our guests upon arrival. When they appear on our farm tours, we educate our guests to understand their purpose and how they benefit all animals on a farm by eliminating pests. Llamas Our llamas are famous, loving, and proud animals often confused for our alpacas! It makes our farm tours important, as they can help differentiate the llama and the alpaca for children and adults. You can even go on hikes with them! Alpacas Often confused for llamas, alpacas are one-of-a-kind, entirely loving, and gentle creatures. Their fur is exceptionally soft and used to make many different goods–something we talk about on tour and sell in our Farm Store. Goats Our pygora goats are fluffy and love the attention of our visitors, especially if you scratch just the right spot behind their ears.. Many people need help understanding goats and their behavior, which is why we want to help educate as many people as we can here at Clover Brooke Farm. We have a large herd of dairy and fiber goats eager to meet and socialize with new people. If you want to snag a space on our next farm tour, be sure schedule your appointment ahead of time! Climb Bear Mountain

@ Bear Mountain State Park

  • September 27, 2025, 10:00AM

We will begin at the Shore of Hessian Lake, near the paddleboat dock. The first leg will be a paved flat path around the lake. The Major Welch trail will veer hard left and proceed up the back of Bear mountain. This section is a long steady climb with a few near rock scrambles. We recommend a Hiking stick or trekking poles to ease your way along. The trail flattens up a bit only near the very top, at which point we will take a break. Perkins Fire Tower will be open (weather permitting) and there is a wonderful clearing (with a coin-op binocular viewer) that provides a view of the Manhattan skyline on clear days. The walk back will be along the Appalachian trail. There are a lot of stairways installed so the passage down will be more leisurely. On the way back down there are a few good places to stop and view the valley or have a handful of Trailmix. Leading the hike will be Ryan Gerbehy, an experienced hiker and guide.
