Details

Event Type Walk/Hike Description This September, take a stroll through history with the New Castle Historical Society's Greeley Farm Walking Tour. The land that is now downtown Chappaqua sits on what was once Horace Greeley's 78-acre farm, with the Historical Society's Horace Greeley House sitting at the northern boundary of this plot. Start on the front porch of the Greeley House to pick up a map of the farm, and then follow the directions to find 11 historic markers scattered along what was once the farm road. This self-guided walking tour passes the sites of former buildings, the spring that provided drinking water for the family, and remains of the dam Greeley built on the Tercia Brook, among other pieces of history. Catch a glimpse into the past as you pass by the modern landmarks like Robert E. Bell Middle School, the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Temple Beth El, the Chappaqua Library, Town Hall, and the train station, all of which are located on the former Greeley Farm. We recommend allowing 50-60 minutes for the walking tour. The Greeley House is a five-minute walk from the Chappaqua Train Station and just a short distance from the Saw Mill River Parkway. There is a small parking behind the Greeley House and plenty of street parking nearby on King Street, Senter Street, and North and South Greeley Streets.
