Ice Yacht WHIFF's 150th Birthday
From December 20. 2025 through January 4, 2026 the Hudson River Ice Yacht Preservation Trust will be displaying WHIFF and ZIP at the Franklin Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. WHIFF, commissioned by Irving Grinnell of Wappingers Falls, NY, for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and restored by members of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club, was considered the “Most Beautiful Ice Yacht In the World”, and this display did much to spread the sport of sailing on ice around the World.
In contrast, ZIP is a very “modern” ice boat called a Skeeter, made in the 1940’s by the Mead Glider Company of Chicago. Sailed for many years by the Pilcer Family on Greenwood Lake, it was lovingly restored by members of the Trust in 2024.
