Join us for an evening of music in the parlor of Historic Cherry Hill… In honor of Juneteenth, this musical program will feature songs from the personal collection of William James Knapp (1843-1885). James Knapp was a musician, a piano tuner and music store clerk, a porter, a nurse, a member of Albany’s Black community, a butler for the Van Rensselaers, and a descendant of the last woman enslaved at Cherry Hill. His life—including his profound talent as a musician—is richly documented in Historic Cherry Hill’s collections. The concert will feature popular, classical, and parlor music from the Gilded Age. The program will be presented by Dr. Christopher Brellochs, an internationally recognized lecturer, performer, music historian, and educator; LayVon Scott, baritone; and Dr. Elizabeth Gerbi, pianist. Dr. Brellochs was a music consultant to Historic Cherry Hill for their exhibition, "The World of William James Knapp." Guests can view the house and exhibition before or after the concert. A reception in Cherry Hill’s peony garden will follow the concert.
