New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site (374 Temple Hill Road, New Windsor, NY) was an encampment of more than 7,000 Continental Army soldiers and 500 family members over the winter of 1782-83. At 2:00 p.m., see a military drill performed by the 7th Massachusetts Regiment and cannon firing, followed by an interactive reading of the Declaration of Independence, the revolutionary document that started it all. Musket firings, blacksmithing, and 18th century surgery/medical demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Admission is free and the site is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
