The Names We Know: Jack & Betty, the First Known African Residents of New Paltz

Aug 16, 2026 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Location: 80 Washington Street, Poughkeepsie NY 12601 In July 1680, New Paltz Patentee, Christian Deyo, purchased an enslaved African man named Jack from New York City physician, Hartman Wessels. Nine years later, Christian's son, Pierre Deyo, purchased an enslaved African girl named Betty from a trafficker in New York City named James Barré. These are the first recorded purchases of enslaved Africans in the community of New Paltz, and Jack and Betty are the earliest recorded African residents of the town. In this presentation, Ulster County Historian, Eddie Moran, will guide attendees through documentary sources to discuss what we know about Jack and Betty, and what their lives in New Paltz may have been like. From Trees to Tallship: Connecting Forest Ecology and Boatbuilding

Examining three historic structures along Huguenot Street, "Three Centuries, Three Cultures" explores the multicultural history of a unique American settlement, known today as New Paltz, New York: the Esopus Munsee wigwam represents the strength and sacrifices of this region’s Indigenous peoples from pre-colonial America to the present day; the 1717 French Church teaches the European colonial origins of the multicultural Hudson Valley; and the Jacob Hasbrouck House shares colonial life for both the free and enslaved members of the community. Ice Yachting at Poughkeepsie: Before and After the Railroad bridge

Stories will be shared of Poughkeepsie sailors like Aaron Innis and John A. Roosevelt, whose ice yachts Haze and Icicle were national champions. Ice yacht races on the river were watched by thousands off the Poughkeepsie waterfront, with skippers vying for silk pennants and silver cups for the title of fastest ice yacht in the world.
