Thomas Cole's Studio: Memory & InspirationApr 30, 2022 to Oct 30, 2022 Location: 218 Spring St, Catskill, NY 12414
Curated by Franklin Kelly, Senior Curator and Christiane Ellis Valone Curator of American Paintings, National Gallery of Art
The artwork that Thomas Cole left behind in his studio when he died suddenly at the age of 47 in 1848 shaped the course of American art. The exhibition, Thomas Cole’s Studio: Memory and Inspiration, will for the first time reassemble those significant works and explore how Cole’s example so powerfully affected the evolution of art in America. The exhibition is curated by Franklin Kelly, Senior Curator and Christiane Ellis Valone Curator of American Paintings at the National Gallery of Art.
“It seemed as if Mr. Cole would…be in in a few minutes, for everything remains as when he last left painting…. Though the man has departed, yet he has left a spell behind him that is not broken.” Jasper F. Cropsey, American Artist, 1850
“I have imagined organizing an exhibition on this topic since I was a graduate student. What was left after his death that had been of such inspiration to so many other artists? It is thrilling to reassemble a selection of the art and artifacts known to have been in the New Studio and show it to new generations.” Franklin Kelly, Exhibition Curator & National Gallery of Art, 2022
