Event Type Trail Volunteer Event Description Give back to trails by joining the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference’s Habitat Helpers crew to remove trash from the trail and weeds from our native plant habitat around the Trails for People Exhibit. The Trails for People Interpretive Exhibit serves as a one-of-a kind gateway to the backcountry to the millions of annual visitors to Bear Mountain State Park, acting as an invitation to travel on the trails neighboring the Park’s popular picnic areas. Its 32 educational signs and hands-on trail structures inform novice and expert trail users alike about the history of the Park, how trails are built, and how volunteers are the lifeblood of our trail systems. Over 7,000 volunteer hours went into building the exhibit surrounding the historic Spider Hill House, just south of Hessian Lake; the construction of this section of the Appalachian Trail, known as the Demonstration Trail; and the development of the signage content. We will meet in the parking lot of the Bear Mountain Inn and divide into two groups. One group will carpool up to the top of the mountain to do trash pickup while the other will walk to the Trails for People Exhibit garden to remove foxtail grass and invasive plants such as barberry and stiltgrass from the native plant garden. We'll also be planting some new native plants. Bring work gloves, a bagged lunch and your favorite gardening tools (if you have them!) Please sign-up so we know how many people to expect and we can let you know of any changes of plans. Organization Hosting the Event New York-New Jersey Trail Conference
