| The mission of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area Program is to recognize, preserve, protect and interpret the nationally significant cultural and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley for the benefit of the Nation. |
 |
| Federal Authority |
| The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area was established by Congress in 1996 and is one of 40 federally designated Heritage Areas, funded through the National Park Service and Department of the Interior by annual appropriations. The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area Program is thankful to all members of our Hudson River Valley Delegation in supporting our program. The sunset date for legislation and appropriations is September 30th 2012. |

| Themes |
The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area has identified three major themes to assist with the interpretation of heritage resources.
Within these major themes, a series of sub-themes have also been identified to refine interpretation and enhance opportunities for collaboration between related resources:
Freedom and Dignity:
Colonial Period
Revolutionary War
Great Americans
Social and Political Issues
Nature and Culture:
Architecture
Art and Artists
Decorative Arts
Parks and Environment
Landscape and Gardens
Corridor of Commerce:
Industry and Commerce
Itineraries have been developed for several of these themes. Itineraries will continue to be developed for additional themes of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. |
