Bannerman's Island Arsenal (Beacon)

The principal feature on Pollepel Island, Bannerman's Castle is an abandoned military surplus warehouse. It was built in the style of a castle by businessman Francis Bannerman VI (1851–1918). It remains one of a very small number of structures in the United States which can properly be called a castle. Pollepel Island is sometimes referred to as Bannerman's Island.[4] One side of the castle carries the words "Bannerman's Island Arsenal"

 

Howland Cultural Center (Beacon)

Civil War General and shipping magnate Joseph Howland was the chief benefactor of the former Howland Library. He joined with ten other leaders of what was then the village of Matteawan and formed the library in 1872. He also commissioned his brother-in-law, Richard Morris Hunt, to design the new library. Hunt's contribution to our community was one of his earliest works.

The garden was established 1930-1960 as the private garden of Walter and Marion Beck, inspired by the garden of eighth-century Chinese poet and painter Wang Wei (??) (698-761). It opened to the public in 1960 under the direction of landscape architect Lester Collins, the Chair of Harvard University's Landscape Architecture program.
